Introduction

The Office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), which incorporates the Civil Service Occupational Health Department (CSOHD), is based in Dublin city centre. The staff consists of doctors, nurses and administration staff. All doctors are on the Medical Councils Register of Medical Specialists in Occupational Medicine, and all nurses have postgraduate qualifications in occupational health.

Services Provided

The department provides an occupational health service to civil servants, prison officers and other public sector employees. Some examples of services offered include:

  • Pre-employment health assessments
  • Review and workplace rehabilitation of employees on sick leave
  • Ill health retirement assessments
  • Workplace health promotion screening & advice
  • Workplace hearing surveillance programmes
  • Workplace immunisation programmes
  • Liaison with the Employee Assistance Service
  • Input to policy matters relating to work & health with Department of Finance, individual Government Departments/ Offices and State Claims Agency
